I was recently chatting with my daughter about a project I was leading for a major enterprise client, and she asked me a profound question—one that cuts to the very core of modern consulting in the age of AI.


I was explaining how I had just built a comprehensive, automated system for my client’s team. Instead of manually rewriting their highly technical engineering updates into business-friendly case studies over the weekend, I built a standardized, MECE-based (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) set of instructions. Better yet, I gave them the exact AI prompt—engineered around the McKinsey Situation-Complication-Resolution (SCR) framework—so they could do it themselves.


My daughter looked at me and asked: "If you give them the prompt and teach them the framework, don't you make yourself redundant?"


It’s a fair question. In fact, it’s the exact fear that drives the traditional consulting industry.


The Gatekeeping Problem

Most consultants gatekeep. Their business model relies on hoarding knowledge, frameworks, and processes to create dependency. They want to be the "black box" where the client feeds in raw data, and the consultant spits out the polished result—for a hefty billable fee, of course.
